thomas has been waking up quite a bit the last month or so. at least 2-4 times a night. as long as william picks him up and rocks him, he goes right back to sleep. sometimes around 4am, it takes longer than that and william ends up taking him to the downstairs room to co-sleep. i got sick a couple weeks ago and william was trying to protect my sleep. which is greatly appreciated but i am not sick anymore and we need to get our little crafty one back on track. i suspected that thomas was just looking for comfort but really didn't have a way to prove it. william doesn't like to hear him cry and neither do i (it certainly has a way of raising your blood pressure) so william always comforts him back to sleep.
well, the night before (at 3am), william was trying to talk through why he keeps waking up. we know he can sleep from 9 to 6 am without needing food. so william keeps thinking it is because he is cold. i've been telling him that he gets congested because he is crying, but he doesn't want to believe that. then he tells me that i need to get myself in order and figure out what is wrong. sheesh... if i had it my way, thomas would only get picked up once after 9pm to check for any remaining burps. anyways, i told him last night that babies wake up here and there during the night. they are not manipulative but they do learn and thomas has learned that if he cries, daddy will come sooth him back to sleep. i think william was finally ready to hear that, so we let him cry and he was back asleep after about 10 minutes of crying. around 12midnight, he cried out but it was literally less than a minute and he was back asleep. the third time, he cried out once and decided it wasn't worth staying up.
he slept right through until 6am. so, william has learned, even though he wants to comfort baby, sometimes, it is better to let them learn to cry it out so they learn not to cry for a certain reaction. then thomas can learn to sooth himself back to sleep and we all get a full night's sleep!

HA! nice to hear that you guys are sleeping through the night now! You must be light sleepers. I don't even hear Ethan cry and make noises in the morning anymore!
i agree with you Catherine. Though I am a sucker for when Sara cries. But then I've learned to discern whether her cries are for attention or she's scared and needs me.
Hey hey now...somebody (mom) just found out that we've been starving our poor little boy.
He's food intake (as measured by dry-table spoon of rice or wheat) is at 3.0 or 4.0 tablespoons.
Last night we up'd it to 6.0 and then some jar food mixed in with milk and he took all of that too!
And this morning I made a big breakfast..instead of the usual 3.0 tablespoon, it was a little over 4 and more jar food (entire 2oz) and mom called me to say he ate it all.
SO between him starving at 4am vs. being too cold vs. being comforted....which one is which?
Last night we stuffed him full..was the first night that we gave him that much food...and he was fine after the early evening cry-out session at 10pm (as we watched 24).
So it could be hunger,
it could be cold,
it could be me spoiling him.
I think it's a combination of all 3. But now that we know he needs more food, we can eliminate that....
As for you John...I'm surprised you even bother waking up since your snoring alone is enough to keep yourself from hearing anything (last Fremont Peak trip I needed earplugs to sleep...your tent was only 3 ft away..and you were LOUD)
hey john - i forgot to put smilie face after my last comment. :)
ah bliss-ful sleep again. thomas only woke briefly for a 2 minute burp and konked out again.
catherine was right...now thomas doesn't bother waking up because tuesday night he learned that daddy won't be picking him up despite his complaining ways.
i think mom will be the disciplinarian in the house.... :)
I don't remember whether John's snoring is worse than a baby fussing. I guess I will find out at the end of the month when we go to Buttonwillow.
At least John doesn't require feeding during the middle of the night. I will be really annoyed if he wakes me up at 1AM and asks me to drive him to Burger King.
